Michigan (MI) Lottery

On May 16, 1972, voters approve a constitutional amendment by a 2-to-1 margin, enabling the establishment of a state lottery.

Then on August 1, 1972, Governor William Milliken signed into law Public Act 239 establishng the Michigan Lottery. Gus Harrison was appointed as the first Lottery Commissioner.

On November 13, 1972, the 50-cent green game ticket went on sale. First weekly drawing was held on November 24, 1972. Then on February 22, 1973, the first $1 million prize was awarded to Taylor resident Hermus Millsaps.

The Michigan Lottery reported annual sales of $2.2 billion in fiscal 2006, and generated $688 million in net revenue for the state School Aid Fund, which supports public education programs throughout the state. Retailers received annual commissions of $165.3 million, while Michigan Lottery players collected prizes worth $1.3 billion.
