Colorado (CO) Lottery
In 1982, the General Assembly approved a bill implementing a state-supervised lottery. The bill created the Colorado Lottery as a division of the Colorado Department of Revenue, with a director appointed by the Executive Director of the Department of Revenue.
The Colorado Lottery sold its first Scratch ticket in January 1983. Lotto began in January 1989, and Cash 5 in September 1996. On August 2, 2001, the Colorado Lottery introduced the mega-jackpot game Powerball. Now, more than two decades since the Lottery began, more than $1.7 billion has been returned to the people of Colorado through parks, open space, recreation, wildlife projects and more, not to mention more than $3.4 billion in the way of prizes.
