Connecticut (CT) Lottery

State Representative John A. "Tony" Miscikoski, of Torrington, known by many as "The Father of the Lottery," believed that a state lottery could provide substantial benefits to the residents of the state. Each year for nearly a decade, Miscikoski presented legislation to authorize lottery sales. Miscikoski's dream became a reality in 1971, and the Connecticut State Lottery came into being.

In fiscal year 2006, the CT Lottery provided $284.8 million to support the valuable services and programs funded by the state's General Fund including public health, libraries, public safety, education and more. Since our start of operation in 1972, the Lottery has returned more than $6.0 billion to the General Fund.

The Lottery, by statute, is designated as an enterprise fund. As such, the agency receives no tax money from the state General Fund for its operations. Instead, the Lottery is self-supporting and operates in accordance with a budget approved by its Board of Directors on an annual basis.

The Lottery realizes its obligation to players extends beyond creating new games and generating revenue for the state. For most people, Lottery tickets are a form of entertainment, but for some, playing the Lottery can be a problem. We're proud of our work, and are dedicated to promoting responsible play.
